Project Boneyard
Well, my bestie and I finished Project Boneyard's 'Locksock the Warden'. I thoroughly enjoyed it, I liked the new environment a lot, and new Coyle content is always welcome in my book!
However, it didn't feel exactly like the Coyle I know and love... It's hard to explain, but I feel as if Red Barrels really laid on the whole fanservice thing really thick. I felt this the moment I heard his opening line in the Project Boneyard teaser, and I was afraid they would go this direction. His new dialogue as a whole is very in-character for him, but I can't help that his character as a whole during this trial was very... fanfic-y? Similarly to his Valentine's Day poem in 2024 which is conveniently written out in the Misc section for your reading pleasure... but at least he references his cattle prod in that one. More on that later.
I was afraid they would tone down his manic voltage-swinging side in favor of his sex appeal, and I feel like my fears came true. AGAIN, not to say I didn't enjoy what we got!! As someone who is VERY in love with him, I'm in hog heaven haha, and would not hesitate to be put in the Warden's shoes, but to me it's SO much more appealing when it comes from out of the blue. Just a little tease of his insane desires in the midst of a thrilling chase is what I'm used to... not him in heat for a whole trial.
Leland has always has a sexual undertone, duh. It's one of his main themes. Threatening to "rip [Reagents] into something fuckable", sexually mutilating mannequins, touching himself during hallucinations, etc. To me, his kind of sexual has almost always been entertwined with extreme cruelty and sadism, and also intertwined with his electricity also more on that later, and while he was cruel to the Warden, it felt... not enough? Which feels crazy to say. As if they toned it down to make him less "scary" and more "sexy"...? His scary IS sexy!!
I don't buy that when the Warden bites down on motherfucking Sergeant Leland Coyle's "Little Justice" [QUOTE]"I didn't hurt Little Justice, did I?" - The Warden, he just bitchslaps the Warden? And then looks around for the Reagents before yelling and then lightly poking the Warden with his stick??? Sure, he kicked him while he was down, but he didn't turn that cattle prod on ONCE!!! HIS BATTERY WAS OFF!!!!!! He's never shown to use his cattle prod on the Warden at all! Or even on himself! What?? That's his whole THING, shoving his prod into Reagents, leaning his head back in ecstasy while torching his own inner thigh, threatening to make people "ride that lightning!!!"[QUOTE]"Somebody's gonna ride that lightning!" - Sgt. Coyle... he's an EXTREME sado-masochist, but now he feels like a generic 50 Shades of Grey-inspired alpha dom that occasionally makes funny comments [QUOTE]"It's a thin blue line and some big blue balls" - Sgt. Coyle. If the Warden bit him hard enough to make him bitch and moan the entire Trial [QUOTE]"You cause a good man this kind of lingering pain, you are asking to get burnt." - Sgt. Coyle, and is supposed to be Leland's fuck-pig, fucking fry him up like good old Southern BBQ!!!
When my bestie and I were discussing his characterization post-Trial, I made a comparison that perfectly describes how I feel. Getting a whole ton of Coyle fan-service in one Trial is like getting a giant cake for dinner. I love cake!! I love sweets!! I will happily eat the cake. However, after eating a good chunk, I start to feel like it's lost it's luster. Isn't cake so much more special as a small dessert after a good hearty meal?
It looks like I have my work cut out for me in terms of character analysis on the site, huh... this whole dissertation was written a day after finishing the new Trial, so a lot of it is my rambling thoughts about Red Barrel's "fanservice-y" approach to his characterization in the Prison Yard. I think a majority of my "problems" is that a lot of what we saw from him was just unexpected and slighty off-putting to me. There's a lot more to be analyzed in the future, especially taking new evidence documents into account.
Phew!
Now that that's off my chest, let's go over some new things about him that I enjoyed. Most of this is just me sharing a little too much with the class, so if you know me in real life, I'm sorry...
- We get to hear what he canonically sounds like / says while getting sucked off. Jesus Christ. Some of my favorite lines from this scene are [QUOTE]"I want that thing clean enough to eat off of." - Sgt. Coyle,[QUOTE]"I'm gonna make that face a crime scene." - Sgt. Coyle,[QUOTE]"You don't use that tongue, I'm gonna turn your ass over and go spelunkin'.", [QUOTE]"You coulda taught the third Missus Coyle a thing or two.", and [QUOTE]"Can I call you Leland?" - The Warden. And various groaning and growling noises.
People had to mo-cap this scene. - Internalized homophobia. There is a PLETHORA of new lines to suggest that 1. He is attracted to men, and/or 2. He will fuck anything that moves and is ashamed when it happens to be a man. Examples being (all from Coyle);[QUOTE]"Way that feels, it shouldn't be.",[QUOTE]"You think you saw something. Moose-eyed fantasists. ",[QUOTE]"You didn't see nothing. Red-blooded American man. You can ask that of three dead wives and all the trim in Oklahoma worth a screw.",[QUOTE]"You don't know what you saw. You got a diseased mind and I'm gonna stomp some Christian values into it.",[QUOTE]"Think you saw me and another man you are god-damned dreaming. Sick hop-head fantasies.",[QUOTE]"Think you saw me and another man you are god-damned dreaming. Sick hop-head fantasies.",[QUOTE]"You sodomites! Liars! You'll die on your knees, all of you.". I like how he switches from trying to gaslighting us into believing we didn't see him having sex with a man, and referencing to our faces that he was indeed his fuck-pig and referencing their act in a "so what, huh!?" kind-of attitude LOL. Also, I don't think this behavior started at Murkoff. I feel he's done this exact song and dance before at an actual prison.
- His new hat is cute!
- Him sweating in the basement [QUOTE]"God damn but I am bastin' in these leathers.". Next time I visit the Prison Farm I need to bring a little vial with me for a keepsake.
- THE WARDEN! He has SUCH a cool design!! I love his mask a ton, it's inspired by a scold's bridle with some pig-like features. Also, with both the Snitch and Warden being bigger guys, it seems Leland might have a type...a man can dream.
- The Project Boneyard poster art!!! I LOVE IT!!
- COYLE'S NEW EXECUTIONS!!!!!!! The one where he has his boot on your shoulder(?) pinning you do the floor.. God almighty. I bet they taste stellar.
