BASIC INFO

NAME ..... Leland Coyle
AGE ..... 38(?)
FROM ..... Blackwell, Oklahoma
VOICE ..... Julian Bailey (ENG)

Name

The name Leland fits him super well in my opinion. I feel like it's an older name that doesn't see much modern use anymore, and some folks see it as a childish name, which fits how crass and truly immature Sgt. Coyle is. I honestly don't think they could've chosen a better suited name for a country hick, it's on the same wavelength to me as like, Cletus or Tucker or Garth.

His surname, Coyle, is indeed a real last name with Irish origins. It's also likely meant to call back to electromagnetic coils, which makes sense considering electricity is am major theme with him (explored in the Personality section).

Age

It's never outright state how old he is (nor his birthday) in the games, though his page on the Fandom wiki states he was born in 1923. I'm not sure where this information comes from, as I cannot find this info anywhere from official sources.

Leland joined the marines at 19, then served in the Pacific Theater. Assuming he served in the Theater as soon as he entered the military, he would've been 19 anytime from 1941 - 1945 (the years the Pacific Theater was active), we could put him anywhere between age 33 - 37 at the time the game takes place in ~1961.
Again, this is assuming he served in the Pacific Theater at age 19. It's most likely that he's older, as he would've likely had at least a few years of serving in the military before being sent into WW2.

With all this in mind, I would comfortably put him anywhere from his early-mid 30s to mid 40s.

Hometown

Coyle comes from the real town of Blackwell, Oklahoma. It's a small town, with a majority white population of 9,199 in 1950 and 6,085 in 2020. The town is/was a sundown town, similarly to many Southern cities in the US at the time.

Voice

   ' ' Officer
       ressssssponding ... ' '

Canadian actor Julian Bailey provides the English voice for Sgt. Coyle, and also possibly provides his French voice as well, though I cannot find anything to confirm this.
Leland's voice is rough, gravelly, and features a heavy Southern accent. He is often yelling or screaming his stream of conciousness to himself, or sometimes, the player (called "Reagents").

Most of his basic voice lines consist of a twisted version of what you'd expect from a police officer in the 1950s, while others consist of various incoherant ramblings, conspiracy theories, or, if he feels like it, even singing.
